“Heady, smoke- and spice-accented blueberry, cherry cola and incense aromas show excellent clarity and pick up a hint of olive with aeration. Sweet, seamless and broad on the palate, offering deeply concentrated dark berry liqueur, spicecake and floral pastille flavors plus a suggestion of candied licorice. The strikingly long, penetrating finish shows strong minerally cut, an echo of sweet blue fruit and sneaky tannins that add focus and gentle grip. 93 pts.” -- Vinous

“I’ve been especially impressed by the progress that Agnès has made with the Journaries bottling, which has been slowly and steadily approaching its big brother La Chavaroche in quality, if not in sheer wildness, over the last few vintages.” - Vinous

Levet’s powerful, nobly rustic wines are a step back to the northern Rhône of another generation. While I'm a long-time fan of the Levet family's traditionally made wines, there's no doubt in my mind that with the arrival of the Levet's daughter, Agnes, the wines are now among the very best being made in the appellation. The wild character and concentration that has always marked the wines is still there, but there's a degree of elegance and polish to them that one didn't find in decades past. Agnes told me that she thinks the 2014s will drink well on the relatively young side because "they have a very nice balance of richness and freshness.”
